John 8 — Truth, Freedom, Light, and the Great I AM
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36, ESV)
Introduction: John 8 Is Right Now
John 8 is one of the most intense and revealing chapters in the entire Bible. It exposes sin, confronts hypocrisy, reveals the heart of Jesus, and draws a sharp line between light and darkness, truth and lies, freedom and slavery.
If you read this chapter honestly, you can’t walk away neutral. What was happening then is happening right now: sexual sin, religious games, spiritual blindness, cancel culture, identity confusion, and a culture that hates absolute truth.
Let’s break it down and let the Holy Spirit speak.
1. The Woman Caught in Adultery (John 8:1–11)
“Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7)
The scribes and Pharisees drag a woman caught in adultery before Jesus. They aren’t really interested in justice; they want to trap Him.
They caught her in sin — but they hid their own.
Jesus does something no one expects: He doesn’t join their cancel party, but He doesn’t excuse her sin either.
He says:
“Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” (John 8:11)
That’s the heart of Jesus: mercy without compromise.
Today, sexual sin is not just tolerated — it’s celebrated. Anything goes: adultery, pornography, fornication, hookup culture, homosexuality, gender confusion, and more. If you dare to say, “This is not God’s design,” you are condemned by the world.
But the Bible is crystal clear:
“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Galatians 5:19–21)
Jesus forgives sinners — but He never blesses sin. He still says, “Go, and sin no more.”
2. “I Am the Light of the World” (John 8:12)
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12)
Jesus doesn’t say, “I am a light among many.” He says, “I am THE light.”
Meanwhile, our generation is drowning in darkness. People call it:
- anxiety
- depression
- emptiness
- burnout
- “I feel lost”
- “I feel numb”
The world offers fake light: crystals, “good vibes,” manifesting, horoscopes, self-help, religion without Jesus.
But Jesus says: if you follow Me, you will NOT walk in darkness.
3. Jesus vs. Religious Appearance (John 8:13–30)
The Pharisees argue with Jesus about authority, testimony, and law. They are more concerned with looking right than being right.
They have religion, but not relationship. They know the Scriptures, but they don’t know the Author.
Today we see the same thing:
- People love Christian language but resist Christian lordship.
- People want church services without a changed lifestyle.
- People post Bible verses but live in open rebellion.
Jesus says:
“Unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” (John 8:24)
There is no neutral opinion about Jesus. He is either Lord — or you are still in your sins.
4. Truth and Freedom (John 8:31–36)
“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31–32)
People love to quote, “The truth will set you free.” But Jesus gave conditions:
- Abide in My word.
- Then you are truly My disciples.
- Then you will know the truth.
- Then the truth will set you free.
Freedom doesn’t come from information — it comes from obedience.
Our culture screams “freedom” — but is full of slavery:
- slavery to porn
- slavery to substances
- slavery to social media and dopamine
- slavery to bitterness and unforgiveness
- slavery to identity confusion and self-hatred
Jesus tells the uncomfortable truth:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.” (John 8:34)
Then He gives the hope:
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)
5. “Your Father Is the Devil” (John 8:37–47)
This is one of the most explosive parts of the chapter. The religious leaders claim:
“We are offspring of Abraham.” (John 8:33)
Jesus answers:
“If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did… You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires.” (John 8:39, 44)
Translation: “You talk like you belong to God, but you act like you belong to Satan.”
Today:
- People call themselves Christians but love what God hates.
- They defend sin passionately and roll their eyes at holiness.
- They say, “Only God can judge me,” but ignore everything He already said.
Jesus gives a simple test:
“Whoever is of God hears the words of God.” (John 8:47)
If we refuse God’s Word, we cannot claim to belong to God.
6. “Before Abraham Was, I AM” (John 8:48–59)
The chapter ends with Jesus dropping a bombshell claim:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8:58)
He uses the divine name “I AM” — the same name God used in Exodus 3:14. He is not just a teacher. Not just a prophet. Not just a healer. He is God in the flesh.
Their reaction?
“So they picked up stones to throw at him.” (John 8:59)
Today, people still “pick up stones”:
- They try to cancel Jesus from culture.
- They attack biblical truth as “hate speech.”
- They mock Scripture, redefine sin, and twist morality.
But Jesus is still I AM. He’s not changing to fit our culture.
🔥 PREPARE TO GET BLASTED BY THE BIBLE
John 8 is not a cute devotional chapter. It is a spiritual X-ray. Let’s connect what happened then to what’s happening now, quickly and clearly:
-
The woman caught in adultery → Our broken, sexualized generation.
Sexual immorality of every kind is being encouraged and celebrated. If you discourage it or call it sin, you are condemned by culture. But the Bible already warned us: “The works of the flesh are obvious…” (Galatians 5:19–21) -
The Pharisees with stones → Modern cancel culture & religious hypocrisy.
Quick to expose someone else’s sin, slow to repent of their own. Harsh with people, soft with themselves. -
“I am the light of the world” → A world drowning in darkness.
Record levels of anxiety, addiction, and confusion. Everybody is “spiritual,” but few want to follow Jesus. Light isn’t a feeling — Light is a Person. -
“The truth will make you free” → A generation enslaved while shouting “freedom.”
We preach freedom while we’re chained to porn, substances, scrolling, and sin. Real freedom only comes by abiding in His Word and obeying His truth. -
“Your father is the devil” → People who claim God but follow the flesh.
Many wave the Christian label but love darkness more than light. John 8 reminds us: your spiritual Father is revealed by your spiritual fruit. -
“Before Abraham was, I AM” → A world that hates absolute truth.
Our culture says, “Live your truth.” Jesus says, “I am the Truth.” Those are not the same thing. Only one will save you.
The Bible is not out of date. We are.
John 8 is God’s way of lovingly saying: “Wake up. Choose your side. Come into the light.”
Prayer of Repentance, Surrender, and Deliverance
If this chapter hit you in any area — don’t argue with it. Respond.
Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You in repentance. I confess that I have walked in darkness, believed lies, and justified my sin. Forgive me for every way I have resisted Your truth. I believe that You are the Light of the world, the Son of God, the great I AM. I ask You to shine Your light into every hidden place in my heart. Expose my sin, my pride, my hypocrisy, my secret struggles. I lay them at Your feet right now. Set me free from every chain — addiction, lust, anger, bitterness, fear, and confusion. Break every stronghold in my mind. I choose to abide in Your Word and to follow You as a true disciple. I surrender my life to You — spirit, soul, and body. Be my Lord, my Savior, my Truth, and my Freedom. In Jesus’ mighty name I pray — Amen.
