John 8 — Let’s Be Honest
This chapter isn’t just a Bible story. It’s us.
John chapter 8 hits different. It’s one of those chapters that makes everybody uncomfortable — religious people, rebellious people, church people, non-church people… everybody.
It starts with a woman caught in adultery. They drag her in front of Jesus. Not because they care about holiness. Not because they care about her. They want to trap Jesus and prove a point.
Sound familiar? Today we don’t throw stones. We post. We comment. We screenshot. We judge. We cancel. We love catching someone else slipping.
“He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her.”

One by one, they walk away. If that scene happened today… would we walk away? Or would we still be typing?
“Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more.”
Jesus didn’t shame her. But He didn’t excuse her either. He brought mercy and truth together.
Let’s Make This Personal
Have you ever…
- Justified something you knew wasn’t right?
- Said, “It’s not that bad”?
- Compared yourself to someone worse to feel better?
- Used “good intentions” as a cover for a bad choice?
John 8 shows us what happens when we point at everybody else… but don’t want the light shining on us.
“You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
“Everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin.”
Let’s be real: if you can’t stop it… if it controls your mood… if it owns your time… if you defend it when it’s challenged… that’s not freedom. That’s slavery.
And slavery doesn’t always feel like chains. Sometimes it feels like comfort.
Whose Voice Are You Listening To?
Later Jesus says something intense. Not to insult people — but to expose what’s really driving them.
“You are of your father, the devil… When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
So ask yourself honestly:
- Do I follow truth even when it hurts?
- Or do I follow what feels good?
- Do I accept correction?
- Or do I get defensive when challenged?
This chapter isn’t about “those people out there.” It’s about me. It’s about you.
Light Exposes — That’s Why It’s Uncomfortable
“I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Light doesn’t attack darkness. It just shows what’s there.
Sometimes we don’t reject truth because it’s wrong. We reject it because it’s accurate.
The Big Question
Are you walking in the light? Or just defending your darkness?
Jesus will not condemn the repentant. But He will confront the proud. Freedom starts when we stop pretending.
If something in your life needs to change, don’t justify it. Bring it to Him. He already knows. He isn’t shocked. He’s ready to free you.
