Dead to Sin, Alive to God — Romans 6 Then and Now

Romans 6 (NIV) • UponThisRock.Church

“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?”
— Romans 6:1-2 (NIV)

Romans 6 isn’t just a chapter about behavior — it’s a declaration of identity. Paul reminds believers that once you’ve been united with Christ, you’ve died to your old life. Sin no longer owns you; grace does.

🔄 Then vs. Now

Then: In Paul’s day, people twisted grace to justify sin. “If grace covers sin,” they reasoned, “then sin more!” Paul shut that down fast: “By no means!”

Now: Our generation does the same thing in new packaging. We call sin “self-expression.” We rename lust “love.” We call rebellion “freedom.” Yet God’s Word has never changed.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 (NIV) warns clearly:

“Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

Jesus Himself took it even deeper. In Matthew 5:27-28 (NIV) He said,

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

So the issue isn’t just actions — it’s attitudes. Sin starts in the mind before it shows up in the body. That’s why Paul says we must crucify the flesh daily and let Christ live through us.

⚔️ The Culture We’re In

Our world has normalized what God called sin. A 2023 Pew survey found that more than 60 % of U.S. adults say “right and wrong depend on the situation.” Moral truth has become opinion — but opinion doesn’t set people free.

Just as Rome was filled with idols, immorality, and pride, our society worships pleasure and calls it progress. Yet the results prove the Bible right: anxiety, broken families, addiction, and loneliness are at all-time highs. Freedom without holiness becomes slavery in disguise.

Romans 6:23 sums it up perfectly:

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

💡 The Call Today

  • Reject counterfeit grace. Grace isn’t permission to sin — it’s power to change.
  • Guard your mind. The battle starts in your thoughts. Take every one captive (2 Cor 10:5).
  • Live what you believe. The world doesn’t need more opinions — it needs proof of God’s power.
  • Shine light, not condemnation. Remember Paul said, “That is what some of you were.” God saves sinners; He doesn’t shame them.

🙏 Final Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender

Father, we come before You humbled. We repent for calling darkness light and for letting culture redefine Your truth. Cleanse our minds, purify our hearts, and break every chain of sin and deception. Teach us to live as people truly dead to sin and alive in Christ. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit and make our lives a testimony of grace and holiness. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we repent, we surrender, and we rise renewed. Amen.
