The R Word
There are countless people who don’t like this word. It offends all kinds of people — even church-going people… leaders… pastors… and probably someone you know. Because when you realize what it really means, it changes your perception of life, truth, and reality.
So… what is the R word?
Maybe you clicked this link because you were thinking of a different “R word.” Whoa — slow down.
It’s not religion. Not radical. Not regret. Not rules. Not routine. Not reputation. Not respectability. Not rebranding.
The R word is: Repent.
And the reason it hits so hard is because repentance isn’t just a word — it’s a verdict on the old you… and a doorway into the Kingdom of God.
The Good News Jesus Preached Was Repentance
A lot of people want “good news” to mean: “God understands, so nothing has to change.” But the Bible’s good news is stronger than that — because it’s not permission to stay in bondage. It’s an invitation to be set free under the reign of God.
Jesus came… “preaching the Good News of God” and saying: “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.”
That wasn’t a soft suggestion. That was a King announcing a Kingdom.
John the Baptist didn’t soften it either
“Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
Jesus preached the same message
“Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
And the disciples carried it forward
“They went out and preached that people should repent.”
After the resurrection, the message didn’t get weaker — it got louder, clearer, and global.
Why This Word Offends People (Even Church People)
Repentance offends because it implies something most people hate to admit: I’m not the standard. God is.
Repentance is not “I feel bad.” It’s “I turn around.” It’s not “I’ll do better someday.” It’s “I submit today.”
“Men loved the darkness rather than the light… For everyone who does evil hates the light… lest his works would be exposed.”
The gospel doesn’t just comfort you. It confronts you — and then it offers you freedom.
After the resurrection, Scripture calls the faith “The Way.”
The Way is narrow because truth is narrow. But it leads to life.
“Nobody’s Perfect”… But God Still Says “Be Perfect”
We’ve all heard: “Nobody’s perfect.” People say it to excuse sin, to soften conviction, and to lower God’s standard down to whatever feels comfortable.
“Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”
God isn’t asking you to polish the old you. He’s calling you to stop living by it.
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away…”
Don’t Forget What You Look Like
Scripture says a person can read truth, hear truth, and even agree with truth… and still walk away unchanged — because they forget what they saw.
“He is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror… and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.”
“He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”
This blog is a mirror. Not to shame you — but to wake you up. If you’re in Christ, you don’t belong to the old you anymore. Don’t forget what you look like now.
Drifting Away Happens Quietly
Drift doesn’t require rebellion. Drift only requires neglect. It’s quiet. It’s gradual. It feels “normal” — until you look up and realize how far you’ve moved.
“We ought to pay greater attention… lest perhaps we drift away.”
“Beware… lest… an evil heart of unbelief… and lest any of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”
When we start lying to ourselves — to our peers — and to God — we start calling “drift” normal. And a new creation can get unnecessarily worn and torn… not because God failed, but because we tried to live a new life with old excuses.
You Can’t Change the Past — But Your Next Step Is Up to You
There’s nothing that can be done to change the past. The way you move forward from this day on is up to you.
“One thing I do: forgetting the things which are behind… I press on…”

- Obey — do the next right thing you already know to do.

Father God, I come before You in humility and truth. I acknowledge that there is nothing I can do to change my past — but I surrender my future fully to You.
I repent for every sin I have justified, excused, hidden, or minimized. I repent for being double-minded, unstable, and slow to obey. I repent for hearing Your Word and not always living it.
In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, I renounce every lie I have believed about myself, about sin, and about You. I renounce every attachment to my old self.
