Test Everything by the Word

Romans 12:2 (NIV) • UponThisRock.Church

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
— Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Life is full of trial and error. We try things, mess up, learn, and hopefully grow. But there’s a difference between learning through experience and **living without wisdom**.

Imagine this: you’re hired to do quality control in a restaurant. Your job is to make sure the food is cooked right. Do you stick your finger in everyone’s food and lick it to check the temperature? Of course not. You use a thermometer — the right tool for the job.

Life works the same way. You can’t test everything with feelings, opinions, or trends. You need a tool — a standard — that never lies. That tool is God’s Word.

📖 The Word of God Is the Standard

God’s Word is the only spiritual thermometer that gives a true reading. Everything else — culture, social media, emotions — can deceive you.

Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Without the Word, we end up doing “what feels right.” That’s exactly what led to the downfall of Israel in the Old Testament.

Judges 21:25 (NIV)
“In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.”

🔥 Modern Examples: The World’s Pattern vs. God’s Pattern

Our world is loud, opinionated, and often wrong. People chase what’s popular, not what’s holy. That’s why Romans 12:2 tells us not to conform — not to copy the culture — but to be transformed.

  • Example 1 – Online Validation: Everyone wants likes, followers, and attention. But God says your worth is not measured in hearts or thumbs, but by His love (Galatians 1:10).
  • Example 2 – Quick “Truth” Culture: People believe anything that sounds good on TikTok or YouTube. But truth isn’t trendy; it’s timeless. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” (Matthew 24:35)
  • Example 3 – Redefining Morality: Many now call evil “good” and good “evil.” That’s nothing new — Isaiah warned about this thousands of years ago.
Isaiah 5:20 (NIV)
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.”

📊 Stats That Reflect Our Need for Renewal

According to Barna Group (2023), only about 6% of U.S. adults hold a truly biblical worldview — meaning most people make moral decisions based on personal feelings, not Scripture. That’s why confusion is rising, depression is climbing, and peace is declining.

At the same time, a Pew Research study found that people who attend church regularly and pray daily report a 33% higher sense of life satisfaction and mental stability than those who don’t. Why? Because when you renew your mind in God’s Word, your whole perspective changes.

🔍 The Bible Teaches Us How to Test Life

When something doesn’t feel right — whether it’s a relationship, opportunity, or temptation — test it with Scripture, not impulse. The Bible says:

1 Thessalonians 5:21–22 (NIV)
“But test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.”

When you renew your mind daily — through prayer, worship, and reading — you’ll start to recognize the difference between what’s holy and what’s hollow.

Psalm 119:105 (NIV)
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

💡 Life Application

If you’re surrounded by noise and temptation, slow down and ask: “What does God’s Word say about this?” You wouldn’t taste-test every soup in the kitchen with your finger — so don’t test every idea with your emotions. Use the thermometer of truth — the Bible — and let the Holy Spirit confirm what’s hot and what’s not.

Transformation starts with awareness. It’s not about perfection — it’s about direction. Every day you renew your mind, you step closer to His perfect will for your life.

🙏 Final Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender

Father God, renew our minds today. Forgive us for conforming to the world instead of Your Word. Deliver us from confusion and compromise. Help us test everything through Your truth and not through our feelings. Teach us to live holy, think pure, and walk in Your perfect will. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we surrender and trust You. Amen.
