Saved by Grace, Strengthened by Faith

Ephesians 2:8–9 (ESV) • UponThisRock.Church

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
— Ephesians 2:8–9 (ESV)

It’s nice to be nice. It’s good to do good. But what about when you slip up? When you say something you didn’t mean, think something you shouldn’t, or react out of anger instead of love? Does that mean you lost your salvation? No — but it does mean you need grace.

Grace isn’t a license to sin; it’s a lifeline when we fall. God’s grace doesn’t make you perfect — it perfects His plan in you. The same grace that saved you is the grace that lifts you up when you stumble and says, “Get back up. You’re still mine.”

⚖️ Faith and Works — The Balance of the Believer

James 2:17 (NIV) says it plain: “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” So we’re not saved *by* works — but if we’re really saved, works will follow.

Faith and obedience are not enemies — they’re partners. One proves the other is alive.

James 2:18 (ESV)
“But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”

Grace saves you. Faith sustains you. Works reveal what’s truly inside you. But don’t get it twisted — you can’t earn your way into Heaven. You can’t out-give grace or out-perform mercy. Your salvation is a gift, not a trophy.

🔥 When We Goof Up

Let’s be real — controlling the flesh can be a challenge. Some days it feels like you’re fighting your own shadow. But the more you practice dying to yourself, the stronger your spirit becomes.

Galatians 5:16 (ESV)
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

Every time you choose prayer over impulse, peace over anger, forgiveness over pride — you grow. The more you train your spirit, the more natural it becomes to live by it. Think of it like a muscle: discipline it, and it strengthens your walk.

Romans 7:15–25 (ESV)
Paul said, “I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate… Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

Even Paul admitted he struggled — but his victory was in Jesus, not himself.

📣 “Lord, Lord” — Empty Words or Living Faith?

Jesus warned that not everyone who calls Him “Lord” will enter the Kingdom, but only those who do the will of His Father (Matthew 7:21). That means it’s not enough to sound holy — our lives have to show transformation.

True faith will always produce fruit. But fruit takes time to grow. So be patient with yourself and others. Grace isn’t just what saves you — it’s what keeps you through the growing process.

Philippians 1:6 (ESV)
“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

📊 Faith and Culture

Recent studies show that nearly 65% of Americans still identify as Christian (Pew, 2023), yet less than 25% attend church weekly or pray daily. Many believe in God but live as if He’s optional.

That’s not to shame — it’s to wake us up. Faith isn’t a checkbox; it’s a lifestyle. The world says “follow your heart,” but God says “follow My Spirit.” Every generation that forgets this truth repeats the same mistakes.

🙏 Final Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender

Father, thank You for Your grace — the gift we could never earn and don’t deserve. Forgive us for the times we’ve tried to earn Your love or doubted Your mercy. Deliver us from guilt, fear, and pride. Strengthen our faith to produce fruit that honors You. Teach us to walk in the Spirit and not the flesh. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we repent, we surrender, and we receive Your grace again. Amen.
