Return to what you know is true

Back to Joy & Under Authority

Psalm 51:12 (NIV) • UponThisRock.Church

“Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”
— Psalm 51:12 (NIV)

This is a calling from heaven. God is inviting you — yes you — to be restored. Not just forgiven, but joyful. Not just saved, but sustained. He says: “Restore the joy of your salvation.” And then He adds: “Grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” That means your heart and your attitude matter.

Even believers can wander off. They can follow what their carnal mind wants, get tricked into thinking that feeling is from the Holy Spirit. Listen: the only real “enemy” keeping you off course might be your own flesh and mind, not always the demon you imagine. Yes, the devil prowls — but he uses the flesh as his doorway.

Romans 8:6–7 (NIV)
“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it.”

Yes — you have authority in Christ. Every demon, every stronghold, every generational curse can be bound. Because Jesus gave you that authority. It isn’t about who you are; it’s about whose you are.

Luke 10:19 (NIV)
“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”

🔥 Joy of Salvation vs. Carrying Guilt

See, salvation isn’t only about receiving forgiveness. It’s about walking in joy and power. When you lose the joy, you lose your strength. Nehemiah declared:

Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV)
“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

When you carry shame, fear and condemnation instead of joy, your Christian walk becomes heavy, not light. But God intends lightness. He intends freedom.

⚔️ The Battle of the Mind

Your enemy might not always be outward. Often it’s the voices in your head — your own thoughts. Paul was real about this:

Romans 7:22–23 (NIV)
“For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me.”

The flesh wars with the spirit. But the Word of God and the Spirit of God give you victory. You just need to yield.

Galatians 5:17 (NIV)
“For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other.”

🔍 The Built-In Moral Compass

< lesson style="margin-bottom:12px;"> Did you know we all have a sense of right and wrong coded inside us? The Bible says even those without the law have the work of the law written on their hearts.
Romans 2:14–15 (NIV)
“Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves… They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even excusing them.”

The conscience is like God’s red-light on your dashboard. You may try to ignore it, but it’s there for a reason — you know when something is wrong.

Hebrews 10:22 (NIV)
“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience.”

📊 Living in Sin — The Hidden Cost

The world says “do whatever makes you happy” — but the Bible says “you reap what you sow.” When you live in defiance of the light you know you had, you sow sorrow.

Studies show sin and hidden guilt often accompany depression. One article states that “Sin leads to guilt and depression — sinful handling of sin further complicates matters leading to greater guilt and deeper depression.” :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

Another study found that religious belief, a sense of personal salvation and forgiveness correlate with lower suicide rates and stronger mental health. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

When you ignore your conscience, you enter a vicious cycle: you sin, you feel guilt, you hide, you fall deeper. But God wants to break that cycle for you.

Galatians 6:7–8 (NIV)
“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.”

💡 A Fresh Start — Under His Authority

Whether you know the Bible front to back, or you only know one verse — or none at all — it’s time to come under his authority. Time to let Him restore the joy, grant you a willing spirit, and sustain you.

God doesn’t need you perfect. He just needs you available. Let your heart say: “I’m yours, Lord.” And watch what happens when you live under that, not over it.

James 4:7–8 (NIV)
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.”

🙏 Final Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender

Heavenly Father, we come before You now broken, honest, and ready. Restore the joy of Your salvation in our lives. Remove despair, replace it with hope. Grant us a willing spirit — hearts ready to obey. Set us under Your authority, cleanse our conscience, and empower us by Your Spirit to walk in victory. In the name of Jesus Christ, we repent, we surrender, we receive. Amen.
