Who Are You Practicing to Be?
A reflection on 1 John — what your habits reveal about your heart.
Most people don’t wake up and decide to live against God. It usually doesn’t start with rebellion — it starts with practice.
Small choices. Repeated habits. Quiet compromises. Not what we say — but what we do consistently.
Scripture is very clear: Our practice reveals our identity.
Walking in the Light
The apostle John doesn’t pretend believers won’t struggle, but he draws a sharp line between stumbling and settling.
1 John 1:6 (WEB) — “If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie…”
Walking in darkness doesn’t mean you are hopeless — it means you are hiding. Walking in the light isn’t perfection — it’s honesty.
1 John 1:7 (WEB) — “If we walk in the light… the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.”
Practice Reveals Truth
John doesn’t measure faith by slogans or labels — he measures it by direction.
1 John 2:4 (WEB) — “He who says, ‘I know him,’ and doesn’t keep his commandments, is a liar…”
This isn’t judgment — it’s rescue from self-deception. What are you practicing?
Who Is Your Father?
John draws a firm line between lifestyles — not ideas.
1 John 3:8–10 (WEB) — “He who practices sin is of the devil… He who practices righteousness is righteous.”
If you practice sin daily, who is forming you? If you practice righteousness, whose child are you?
Love in Action
Jesus gives us a simple test for how we treat others:
Matthew 7:12 (WEB) — “Therefore whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them.”
John echoes this same truth:
1 John 3:18 (WEB) — “Let’s not love in word only… but in deed and truth.”
Loving others the way we want to be loved is not a suggestion — it’s evidence of a life walking in the light.
Faith Brings Victory
1 John 5:4 (WEB) — “This is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith.”
Victory doesn’t start tomorrow — it starts with repentance today. Walking in the light is not about never failing — it’s about never hiding.
