Put On the New Life
Colossians 3
Let’s be real for a second. Most of us don’t struggle because we don’t know what’s right. We struggle because we don’t let go of what’s wrong.
Colossians 3 hits this head-on. It doesn’t just tell us what to believe — it tells us how to live.
Set Your Mind Higher
Colossians 3:1-2
“Since then you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above… Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
If you belong to Christ, your life isn’t just about survival anymore. It’s not just about bills, stress, drama, or what people think about you.
You’ve been raised into something higher. But you have to actually set your mind there.
That means:
Stop replaying the past.
Stop feeding negative thoughts.
Stop living like this world is all there is.
Put Off the Old You
Colossians 3:5
“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature…”
This is where it gets real. God isn’t asking you to “manage” your old life. He’s telling you to kill it.
Old habits.
Old anger.
Old ways of thinking.
Old reactions.
You can’t carry your old life and your new life at the same time.
Colossians 3:8
“But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.”
Let it go. Not slowly. Not later. Now.
Put On the New You
Colossians 3:10
“And have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”
Following Jesus isn’t just about stopping bad things. It’s about becoming someone new.
You don’t just remove sin — you replace it with Christ.
Colossians 3:12
“Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
This is your new identity. Not fake. Not forced. Formed by the Spirit.
Let Christ Rule
Colossians 3:15
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…”
Notice it says let.
You can resist God’s peace. Or you can surrender to it.
A lot of people want peace… but don’t want to let Christ be in control.
Real Life Application
This isn’t theory. This is everyday life.
At work.
At home.
In traffic.
On your phone.
When nobody is watching.
You have a choice:
Old self or new self?
Reaction or obedience?
Pride or humility?
Control or surrender?
The Truth
You can’t transform yourself. But you can surrender yourself.
And when you do, God does what you could never do on your own.
Colossians 3:17
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus…”
Not some things. Not church things. Everything.
Prayer
Father God,
I don’t want to hold onto my old life anymore.
I confess the things I’ve been keeping that don’t belong to you.
Change my heart.
Renew my mind.
Teach me to walk in the new life you’ve given me.
Help me put off what is wrong
and put on what is right.
Let your peace rule in me.
Let your Spirit lead me.
I surrender fully to you.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
