Matthew 3 — Repentance Before Religion
Matthew 3 doesn’t open with comfort, tradition, or celebration. It opens with a call that still confronts us today: repent.
Before Jesus preached publicly… before miracles… before crowds… God sent a voice crying in the wilderness.
Not to entertain. Not to impress. But to prepare hearts.
A Voice in the Wilderness
Matthew 3:1–3 (WEB)
“In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,
‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!’
For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying,
‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
make ready the way of the Lord.
Make his paths straight.’”
John didn’t appear in palaces. He didn’t seek popularity. He didn’t soften the message.
Repentance was — and still is — the doorway into the Kingdom.
Simple Life. Sharp Message.
Matthew 3:4 (WEB)
“Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist.
His food was locusts and wild honey.”
John’s life matched his message. He wasn’t distracted by vanity, comfort, or image.
When truth matters, appearance fades.
Confession and Baptism
Matthew 3:5–6 (WEB)
“Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.
They were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.”
Notice the order:
- Repentance
- Confession
- Obedience
There was no pretending. No comparison. No image management.
Just honest hearts before God.
Religion Without Repentance
When religious leaders showed up without changed hearts, John didn’t flatter them.
Matthew 3:7–10 (WEB)
“But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them,
‘You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance!
Don’t think to yourselves, “We have Abraham for our father,”
for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees.
Therefore every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.’”
Heritage doesn’t save. Tradition doesn’t save. Titles don’t save.
Fruit reveals the heart.
External Water vs. Internal Fire
Matthew 3:11–12 (WEB)
“I indeed baptize you in water for repentance,
but he who comes after me is mightier than I,
whose sandals I am not worthy to carry.
He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire.
His winnowing fork is in his hand,
and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor.
He will gather his wheat into the barn,
but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.”
Water can get you wet. Only Jesus changes the heart.
The Holy Spirit doesn’t come to decorate your life — He comes to purify it.
Jesus Steps Into Obedience
Matthew 3:13–15 (WEB)
“Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
But John would have hindered him, saying,
‘I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?’
But Jesus answered him,
‘Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.’
Then he allowed him.”
Jesus didn’t need repentance — but He chose obedience.
He didn’t say, “I’m above this.” He stepped into humility.
The Father Speaks
Matthew 3:16–17 (WEB)
“Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water:
and behold, the heavens were opened to him.
He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.
Behold, a voice out of the heavens said,
‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.’”
The Father didn’t speak because of tradition. He spoke because of obedience.
Heaven responds when hearts are aligned.
What Matthew 3 Means for Us Today
- Repentance still comes before renewal
- Fruit still matters
- Religion without relationship is empty
- The Holy Spirit still transforms
- God still delights in obedience
This chapter invites us to stop pretending, stop comparing, and stop hiding behind tradition.
It invites us to prepare the way — first in our own hearts.
Final Prayer — Repentance and Renewal
Father God,
I come to You honestly.
I don’t want religion without repentance.
I don’t want tradition without truth.
I repent of sin, pride, and self-reliance.
I ask You to cleanse my heart and renew my mind.
Produce real fruit in my life.
Fill me with the Holy Spirit.
Burn away what does not belong.
Prepare my heart for Your Kingdom.
Make my life pleasing to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
