The Power and Supremacy of Christ
Colossians 1 — Jesus is not just part of life. He holds all of it together.
Let’s get straight to it. A lot of people say they believe in Jesus, but they still live like everything depends on them.
They want Jesus close enough to comfort them, but not close enough to rule them. They want help, peace, forgiveness, maybe even heaven one day — but they do not want full surrender right now.
Colossians 1 completely crushes that mindset. This chapter does not present Jesus as a life coach, a motivational speaker, or a religious mascot. It reveals Him as supreme. Over creation. Over the Church. Over death. Over salvation. Over you.
Jesus Is the Image of the Invisible God
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”
If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. Not culture. Not opinions. Not trends. Not religion without power. Jesus.
He is not one option among many. He is the visible revelation of the invisible God.
Jesus Created Everything
“For by him all things were created, in the heavens and on the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things are held together.”
Read that again. All things were created by Him. Through Him. For Him.
That means your life is not random. Your existence is not accidental. History is not spinning out of control. And the powers people fear — governments, systems, darkness, spiritual forces — are not above Christ.
Jesus is before all things. And right now, even while people ignore Him, mock Him, or resist Him, He is still holding all things together.
The breath in your lungs? Held together by Christ.
The world that rebels against Him? Still held together by Christ.
The person reading this who feels like life is falling apart? You are not outside His power.
Jesus Is Head of the Church
“He is the head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”
Jesus is not supposed to be an accessory to the Church. He is the head of it.
Not personalities. Not denominations. Not brands. Not platforms. Not gifted speakers. Christ.
And if Christ is not truly the head, then people start following personalities instead of the Savior. That is when churches divide, pride grows, and people get hurt.
Colossians 1 brings us back to the center: in all things He must have the preeminence. Not some things. All things.
Jesus Is the Fullness of God
“For all the fullness was pleased to dwell in him.”
Jesus is not lacking. He is not partial. He is not one piece of the answer. He is the fullness.
So when people say, “I have spirituality, but I do not need Jesus,” they are rejecting the fullness for emptiness.
When people say, “I believe in God, but I do not want Christ ruling over me,” they are rejecting the very One in whom the fullness dwells.
Jesus Reconciles What Sin Broke
“And through him to reconcile all things to himself, by him, whether things on the earth, or things in the heavens, having made peace through the blood of his cross. You, being in past times alienated and enemies in your mind in your evil works, yet now he has reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy, without defect, and blameless before him.”
This is where it gets deeply personal.
Sin did not just make people imperfect. It made us alienated. Enemies in our minds. Broken in our works.
But Jesus did not stay distant. He made peace through the blood of His cross.
That means the same Christ who created all things is the same Christ who went to the cross to redeem sinners. The One with all power is also the One with nail-scarred hands.
He did not reconcile you so you could stay unchanged. He reconciled you to present you holy, clean, and blameless before God.
So What Does This Mean for You?
It means Jesus is not asking to be squeezed into your schedule. He is Lord.
It means you do not get to build your own version of Christianity around comfort and convenience. He must have first place.
It means your anxiety, your fear, your shame, your confusion, your habits, your pride, your plans — all of it must come under the supremacy of Christ.
And it means that no matter how strong the darkness feels, it is not stronger than Him.
The Reader Has to Answer This
Is Jesus really first in your life?
Not in theory. Not in your bio. Not in your church attendance. In your actual life.
In your thoughts. In your decisions. In your habits. In your money. In your relationships. In your private life.
Because Colossians 1 does not leave room for a half-surrendered Christ. He is either supreme — or you are still trying to be.
Hope for the Broken Reader
Maybe you read this and realize you have been treating Jesus like a helper instead of Lord.
Maybe you have let fear lead you. Or pride. Or desire. Or pain.
The answer is not despair. The answer is surrender.
The Christ who is above all things is also able to save completely. He is powerful enough to hold creation together, and merciful enough to forgive you, cleanse you, restore you, and lead you.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, forgive me for the places where I have not given You first place. Forgive me for treating You like an addition instead of the center. Forgive me for pride, fear, self-will, and half surrender.
You are above all things. You created all things. You hold all things together. You made peace through the blood of Your cross.
I surrender my life to You. Be first in my heart. Be first in my thoughts. Be first in my decisions. Be first in everything.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
