When the Light Stings
Why do some people hate the Bible, God, and His followers? Jesus says the light exposes what we would rather hide. The world sells a story that feels good in the dark. When truth shows up, it can sting.
Why the light bothers us
- We’re shaped by the feed: adult internet users average ~6h38m online/day.[1]
- TV still dominates leisure: about 2.6 hours/day watching TV.[2]
- News goes social: around 1 in 5 U.S. adults get news on TikTok; 43% under 30.[3]
- Lonely hearts: roughly half of U.S. adults report loneliness.[4]
- Darkness destroys: ~87,000 overdose deaths (12 months ending Sept 2024).[5]
Bottom line: Competing “truths” multiply. But the Light of Jesus doesn’t change. John 1:4–5
Live in the light (and why it works)
1) Confess → Clean heart
1 John 1:7–9 · Psalm 139:23–24 · James 5:16
Practice: Tell God the truth; write it down; share with a trusted believer.
2) Repent → New direction
Acts 3:19 · Prov 28:13 · Isa 55:7
Practice: Replace the habit—put Scripture, prayer, or service in the same time slot that sin used to own.
3) Renew your mind → Different defaults
Rom 12:2 · Col 3:1–2 · Phil 4:8
Practice: Phone in another room; give Jesus your first 15 minutes.
4) Share with courage + gentleness
1 Pet 3:15 · Col 4:5–6 · 2 Tim 2:24–26 · John 1:14
Practice: Lead with your story of change; finish with Jesus’ truth.
5) Choose community over isolation
Acts 2:42–47 · Heb 10:24–25 · Ps 68:6
Practice: Eat with believers weekly; serve monthly; pray daily together (texts count!).
6) Costly love makes the message credible
Matt 5:14–16 · 1 John 3:16–18 · Luke 6:27–28
Practice: Meet a need: food, clothing, rides, listening. Let deeds preach with words.
7) Hope under pressure
Rom 5:3–5 · 2 Cor 4:16–18 · John 16:33
Practice: Pray like you’re on the persecuted church’s team; bless your enemies by name.
Relatable problems → Bible remedies
- Anxiety/Worry: Phil 4:6–7; Matt 6:25–34; 1 Pet 5:7
- Addiction/Substances: 1 Cor 6:12; Eph 5:18; Gal 5:16
- Porn/Lust: Matt 5:27–30; 1 Thess 4:3–5; Job 31:1
- Anger/Retaliation: Rom 12:17–21; Jas 1:19–20; Matt 5:9
- Debt/Greed: 1 Tim 6:6–10; Prov 3:9–10; 2 Cor 9:6–8
- Gossip/Online dragging: Eph 4:29; Prov 26:20; Matt 18:15
- Doubt/Cynicism: Jude 22–23; Mark 9:24; John 20:27–29
- Fear of people: Prov 29:25; Acts 4:29–31; Josh 1:9

- Day 4: Pray by name for the person who hurt you. Luke 6:27–28
- Day 5: Share your testimony with one person. 1 Pet 3:15
- Day 6: Serve with a church outreach.

Final Prayer — Repentance, Deliverance, Surrender
Jesus, I step into Your light. I renounce lies I’ve believed and sins I have hidden. Forgive me, cleanse me, and break every chain—fear, addiction, anger, shame. Holy Spirit, fill me, renew my mind, and give me bold love with gentle truth. Father, I surrender my time, habits, feed, and future. Use my life to shine Your light. In Jesus’ name, amen.
