When love leads, people are built up. When “being right” leads, people get hurt.

Introduction
1 Corinthians 8 addresses a very practical question in the early church—what to do about food sacrificed to idols. Some believers knew that an idol is nothing; others felt deeply troubled by the practice. Through the apostle Paul, the Holy Spirit teaches us that knowledge without love can harm people, while love builds people up.
Big Idea: It’s better to love people than to just try to be right.
Reading: 1 Corinthians 8:1–3
“We know that ‘We all possess knowledge.’ But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But whoever loves God is known by God.”
Reflection
In Corinth, believers were split: some had the facts, others had fragile consciences. Paul says that being “right” is not enough—love must lead. We face different idols today (money, fame, politics, pleasure, even our phones), but the issue is the same: will we use knowledge to serve ourselves or use love to serve others?
Real-World Issue
Online debates, family arguments, church disagreements—people try to win points more than hearts. We prize being right more than being loving, and relationships fracture.
Biblical Solution
Let love lead truth. Jesus never compromised truth, but He always led with love.
CTA: Ask yourself—Do I want to win the argument, or do I want to win the soul?
Reading: 1 Corinthians 8:4–6
“So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that ‘An idol is nothing at all in the world’ and that ‘There is no God but one.’ … yet for us there is but one God, the Father… and one Lord, Jesus Christ…”
Reflection
Idols are powerless, but people can still be powerfully deceived. Only the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give life and meaning.
Real-World Issue
Our culture chases “so-called gods”—celebrity worship, self-obsession, political saviors, trendy spiritualities—yet anxiety, loneliness, and emptiness rise.
Biblical Solution
Center your life on the One true God. Everything else is counterfeit.
CTA: Declare today—I will live for the One true God, not the idols of this world.
Reading: 1 Corinthians 8:7–9
“Not everyone possesses this knowledge… Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak.”
Reflection
Just because you can handle something doesn’t mean others can. Freedom without love can damage tender faith.
Real-World Issue
Our choices—what we consume, post, drink, joke about—can influence kids, new believers, and struggling friends.
Biblical Solution
Live responsibly. Your life preaches louder than your words.
CTA: Ask—Is my lifestyle helping people see Jesus, or is it becoming a stumbling block?
Reading: 1 Corinthians 8:10–13
“If someone with a weak conscience sees you… won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? … When you sin against them in this way… you sin against Christ. Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall… I will never eat meat again…”
Reflection
Paul would give up a legitimate freedom to protect someone else’s soul. That’s mature Christian love.
Real-World Issue
We live in a culture of “my rights.” But disciples of Jesus carry a cross—not a crown of personal preferences.
Biblical Solution
Be ready to lay down something permissible if it harms another. That’s Christlike love.
CTA: Pray—Lord, help me value the souls of others above my own freedoms.
Putting It Into Practice This Week
- Pause before you post: Will this build someone up?
- Choose people over preferences: Love lays down its rights.
- Mentor the weak: Encourage, don’t embarrass.
- Worship beyond music: Live Romans 12:1—offer your life to God daily.
Closing Prayer — Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender
Pray aloud:
Heavenly Father, I confess that I have often chosen knowledge over love, freedom over responsibility, and self over others. Forgive me for every idol and prideful attitude. Lord Jesus, I repent and surrender my life to You. Wash me in Your blood; fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Deliver me from sin and selfishness. Teach me to build others up and to value their souls above my freedoms. I lay down my rights and take up my cross. I belong to You—today and forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
