A Spiritual Check-Up
By: Steven Jones II | UponThisRock.Church
đ§ Welcome to Your âMind Therapyâ Moment
Imagine you’re in a quiet room. I ask: âHow do you feel when you pick up your phone?â You pause. Maybe it’s anxiety, boredom, or emptiness. You scroll⌠and suddenly 30 minutes have passed. Then 3 hours.
You suspect something’s wrong. Somethingâs chipping away at your clarity, focus, and spirit. Whatâs happening isnât just fatigueâitâs brain rot.

đ§ The Science of Screen-Induced Damage
This isnât just hyperbole. Research shows:
- đą MRI scans of children 3â5 years old reveal altered brain development from heavy screen use (2.7âŻyrs ago) (Nate Holdridge, Research Horizons).
- đ A major study found youth spending 7+ hours daily on screens had higher rates of depression, anxiety, aggression, and ADHD (Nexus Health Systems).
- Brain-rot has become a recognized phenomenonâOxford Word of the Yearâdescribing âdeterioration of mental or intellectual stateâ from mindless screen consumption (News.com.au).
- Harvard notes screens give âimpoverished stimulation,â stunting creativity and attention development (HMS Harvard).
- Stanford research shows multitaskers lag in focus and memory (Wikipedia).
Weâve gone from âdonât sit too close to the TVâ to carrying screens in our pockets, draining our mental resilience.
𧣠The Spiritual Depletion
This is bigger than focus or memory. The enemy is using screens to desensitize us:
- Normalizing sin
- Mocking accountability as bigotry
- Replacing truth with entertainment
- Telling us ânothingâs wrongâ even as our souls dim
Scripture warns us:
âLittle children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteousâŚ_ he who practices sin is of the devil.â_
â 1 John 3:7â8 (Nate Holdridge, Talk Jesus)
âBy this we know who are the children of God: whoever does righteousness is born of Him, and⌠whoever does not love his brother abides in death.â
â 1 John 3:10 (Bible Hub, YouTube)
The digital age wants us to think feelings rule. But God says discernment does.
đŻ Time for a Mind Restoration
Letâs check your spiritual vitals:
- Do you call sin wrong, or fear offending if you point it out?
- Do you value accountability, or cringe at the word âjudgmentalâ?
- Do you chase likes, or chase Christ?
Romans 12:2 commands:
âDo not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.â
But if our minds are on earthly thingsâdoom-scrolling, chasing dopamine, eating liesâwe become blind to Godâs agenda.
đď¸ Time for a Digital Detox
What if we:
- Deleted social apps for a week? Not saying close them completely but a one week “turn it off”.
- Replaced 30 minutes of mindless scrolling with Scripture?
- Uninstalled one app that constantly tempts you?
- Spent 20 minutes in nature or journaling?
Studies show digital detox improves focus, mood, relationships (News.com.au, Wikipedia). Scripture says:
âSet your minds on things above, not on things on the earth.â
â Colossians 3:2
đż A Spiritual Fresh Start
If youâre ready:
- Stop numbing digitally.
- Pray for Godâs Word to fill your mind.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see deceit for what it is.
- Reconnect with real community, not avatars.
- Practice discernment, not defensiveness.
đ Final Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance & Surrender
Heavenly Father,
I am tired of feeling foggy, anxious, and numb. I see how screens have rotted my mind, reprogrammed my heart, and blinded my spirit. I repent for every moment I chose distraction over Your presence.Jesus, release me from addiction to useless content and deception. Fill me with Your truth and restore my mind with Your peace. Help me recognize wrong as wrong, courage to hold myself to Your standard, not the worldâs.
Holy Spirit, renew my mind daily. Help me practice discernment, resist digital idols, and seek heavenly wisdom. Make me a child of Godâlight in darkness, discerning in an age of deception.
In Jesusâ name, amen.
