Luke 9:46–62 shows us what real discipleship looks like. Christ is alive, walking with us now, and by His Spirit He should be the One telling us what to do, how to do it, and when to move. This is where spiritual discernment becomes life or death.
Arguing About Who Is the Greatest (Luke 9:46–48)
Luke 9:46–48 (NIV)
“An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. Then he said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me… For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.’”
The disciples were walking with Jesus in the flesh, yet their hearts were still stuck on competition, rank, and status. They wanted to know who would be the “top” disciple.
Nothing has changed. Today many believers still chase:
- Titles and positions
- Platforms and followers
- Recognition and applause
We live in a culture of self-exaltation, not humility. But Jesus flips the script and uses a child to show us that greatness in His Kingdom looks like humility, servanthood, and trust.
Scriptures that reinforce this:
- James 4:6 – “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
- Philippians 2:3 – “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”
- Matthew 23:11 – “The greatest among you will be your servant.”
Discernment says: If Jesus is truly King, I don’t need to fight for the throne.
“Whoever Is Not Against You Is for You” (Luke 9:49–50)
Luke 9:49–50 (NIV)
“Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
“Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”
John tries to shut down a man casting out demons simply because the man isn’t part of their group. Jesus rebukes that territorial mindset.
In our day, believers often spend more energy attacking one another over minor differences than confronting darkness. Church splits, social media wars, and denominational battles shout louder than the Gospel.
Scriptures that reinforce this:
- 1 Corinthians 1:10 – “That there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”
- Romans 12:18 – “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
In a world where persecution of Christians is increasing in many nations, the Body of Christ cannot afford to waste time shooting at its own members.
Discernment says: If Christ is truly working, I rejoice—even if it’s not through me or my “brand.”
“Let the Dead Bury Their Own Dead” (Luke 9:57–62)
Luke 9:59–60 (NIV)
He said to another man, “Follow me.”
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
Luke 9:61–62 (NIV)
Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”
Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
These are some of the hardest words Jesus ever spoke. Why so strong?
Because any excuse—no matter how “reasonable”—becomes spiritual death when it delays obedience. The issue was not funerals or family; the issue was priorities and delay. “Lord, I will follow You… but first…”
Today, the excuses sound like:
- “Lord, I’ll follow You fully after this season at work calms down.”
- “After I make more money, I’ll get serious about serving You.”
- “Once the kids are older, then I’ll really plug in.”
- “I’ll obey later—right now I just need to do me.”
Jesus is clear: If you’re always looking back, you’re not fit for Kingdom work.
Scriptures that reinforce this:
- Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
- Romans 12:1 – “Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”
- 2 Corinthians 5:7 – “For we live by faith, not by sight.”
Discernment says: When Jesus says “Follow Me,” the only right answer is “Yes, Lord”—without “but first…”
Christ Is Alive and Still Leading His People
Following Jesus is not just:
- Knowing Bible stories,
- Going to church on Sundays,
- Listening to Christian music,
- Posting verses on social media.
Following Jesus means hearing the living Christ and obeying Him in real time.
Scriptures that reinforce this:
- Hebrews 13:8 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
- John 10:27 – “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
- Romans 8:14 – “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
- John 16:13 – “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”
Across the world, believers testify of Jesus leading them through dreams, promptings, confirmations, bold steps of faith, and supernatural guidance. In countries where following Christ can cost you your life, spiritual discernment is not a luxury—it’s survival.
Studies show Christianity is growing fastest in places with persecution and dependence on the Holy Spirit, while it is often declining in comfortable, self-sufficient cultures. That alone is a wake-up call: when we truly listen and obey, the Church grows—even in the dark.
Why This Matters for You Right Now
We live in a world full of voices:
- Culture tells you who to be.
- Social media tells you what to think.
- Politics tells you who to hate.
- Fear tells you what to avoid.
But Christ, by His Spirit, is still saying: “Follow Me.”
Most people are not destroyed by one big decision—they are slowly drained by thousands of tiny compromises and delayed obediences.
Discernment is simply this: hearing Jesus, trusting Jesus, and obeying Jesus—today.
Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender
If this hit home—if you recognize excuses, pride, delay, or confusion in your walk—pray this from your heart:
Father, in the name of Jesus,
I repent for giving You excuses.
I repent for delaying Your voice and choosing my comfort over Your calling.
Forgive me for pride, selfish ambition, fear, and double-mindedness.
Lord Jesus, You are alive. You are speaking. You are Lord.
Deliver me from every chain that keeps me from following You fully—
from addiction, compromise, laziness, fear of people, and love of this world.
I surrender my life, my plans, my future, and my reputation to You.
Fill me with the Holy Spirit.
Give me spiritual discernment to hear Your voice
and courage to obey immediately.
Use me for Your Kingdom and for Your glory.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
