Freedom from Religion

Relationship > Religion
…and “Spiritual” Doesn’t Always Mean What You May Think

A strong relationship with God is not the same thing as being religious.

Religion can be performance.
Relationship is presence.

Religion can be routines, traditions, and opinions.
Relationship is repentance, obedience, and a life that is actually changed.

Religion can look holy on the outside.
Relationship transforms the heart.

“I’m Not Religious — I’m Spiritual”

Many people today hear the word religion and immediately say:
“I’m not religious — I’m spiritual.”

But here’s something important to understand:

Being “spiritual” doesn’t always mean what you may think.

You don’t stop being spiritual because you don’t like church.
You don’t stop being spiritual because you don’t read the Bible.
You don’t stop being spiritual because you reject religion.

We are all spiritual beings.

The real question is not if you are spiritual —
the question is which spirit is influencing your life.

The Lie: “Spiritual” Means Safe

The world has rebranded spirituality.

  • Self-care
  • Manifestation
  • Energy
  • Vibrations
  • The universe
  • Higher self
  • “My truth”

It sounds peaceful.
It sounds harmless.
It sounds enlightened.

But spiritual does not automatically mean good.

The Bible never treats spiritual things as casual or neutral. It teaches that there are real spiritual forces at work — some from God, and some not.

When people say “I’m spiritual,” what they often mean is:
“I’m open to spiritual things as long as I stay in control.”

But that’s not how spiritual reality works.

You don’t get to sample spirits like flavors.
You don’t get to open spiritual doors and decide later whether it mattered.

Relationship With God Has a Name: Jesus Christ

God did not leave humanity guessing.

Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
(John 14:6)

Truth is not a feeling.
Truth is not “what works for me.”
Truth is not “my spiritual journey.”

Truth is a Person.

And Jesus is not one option among many.
He is the King.

Religion Can Be Fake — and Still Look Holy

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

You can be religious and still be far from God.
You can know church language and still not know Jesus.
You can do good deeds and still be living in rebellion.

Jesus warned:

“Many will say to me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’

Then I will tell them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me.’”

(Matthew 7:22–23)

Not “I used to know you.”
Not “you were close.”
“I never knew you.”

Because relationship is not the same as religious activity.

Wrong Spirits Bring Real Consequences

If we are all spiritual beings, then spiritual choices matter.

Opening yourself to the wrong influences — whether knowingly or unknowingly — has consequences.

It doesn’t always look dramatic.

  • Anxiety you can’t explain
  • Depression that won’t lift
  • Constant confusion
  • Fear that controls you
  • Anger you can’t shut off
  • Compulsions and cravings
  • Spiritual emptiness
  • Endless searching for “more” with no peace

The enemy loves people who are “spiritual” but refuse Jesus — because they are open, but not protected.

Real Relationship With God Involves Repentance

The world hates the word repentance because it means:
“I was wrong — and I’m turning around.”

But repentance is not humiliation.
Repentance is freedom.

God does not ask you to impress Him.
He asks you to be honest.

A real relationship with God is built on surrender, not pretending.

If This Is You — Come Home

If you’ve been hurt by religion — come home.
If you’ve been chasing spirituality — come home.
If you’ve been trying to be your own god — come home.

Jesus is not asking for your performance.
He is asking for your heart.

The peace you’ve been searching for in a thousand places is found in one place:
Jesus Christ.

Prayer of Repentance, Surrender, and Deliverance

Father God,
I come to You in the name of Jesus Christ.

I repent for every way I opened my life to the wrong voices, influences, and spirits.

I repent for pride, self-reliance, and trying to define truth on my own terms.

I renounce Satan and every lie of darkness.
I renounce spiritual deception, idolatry, divination, and witchcraft — whether I knew what I was doing or not.

Jesus, I belong to You.
Forgive me.
Cleanse me.
Deliver me.
Fill me with the Holy Spirit.

Remove every veil.
Break every chain.
Teach me to hear Your voice and obey.

I surrender my life to You today.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
