From Darkness to Deliverance
2 Samuel 7:22 (NIV) • UponThisRock.Church
“How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.”
— 2 Samuel 7:22 (NIV)
Five years ago, while standing in the shower, Steven Jones — pastor of UponThisRock.Church — was brought to his knees. God spoke to him in a way that pierced straight through every wall he’d built up. The Lord said, “My son, seek wrongdoing no more.”
Steven had been living a double life for too long — torn between light and darkness, spirit and flesh. But that day, Heaven interrupted. From that moment forward, he decided to do everything the right way — God’s way — keeping his heart anchored in the truth of Christ.
The doors of evil began to close. He sought deliverance and was freed from unclean spirits connected to Baal, Jezebel, and other influences that had crept in through sin and generational bondage. What the enemy meant for destruction, God used for deliverance. Today, he and his wife are walking in blessing, raising four beautiful children, with a peace that could only come from Heaven itself.
🕊️ The God of Complete Turnarounds
God has always been in the business of turning the wicked into warriors for His Kingdom. The Bible is filled with people who were once enemies of God, transformed into His greatest instruments of grace.
Saul → Paul (Acts 9)
Before becoming the Apostle Paul, Saul was a Pharisee obsessed with destroying followers of Jesus. He wasn’t just against the church — he was authorized to hunt Christians down, imprison them, and even have them executed for “blasphemy.”
Then one day, while on the road to Damascus, a blinding light from Heaven stopped him in his tracks. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say:
“Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.
The voice replied, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” — Acts 9:4–5 (NIV)
In that moment, Saul realized he wasn’t just fighting people — he was fighting God Himself. Blind and broken, he was led into Damascus, where a man named Ananias — once terrified of Saul — was told by God to go and pray for him. When he did, scales fell from Saul’s eyes, both physically and spiritually. He was baptized, filled with the Holy Spirit, and the man who once hunted believers began preaching the same gospel he tried to destroy.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
That’s the power of Jesus — one encounter can flip your entire life upside down and right-side up.
🎸 Modern-Day Testimonies of Radical Change
Brian “Head” Welch — From Metal to Mercy
Brian Welch, the guitarist for the heavy metal band Korn, lived the dream the world sold him: fame, money, parties, drugs, and millions of fans. But inside, he was dying. Addicted, depressed, and spiritually tormented, he admitted to hearing dark voices in his head — the same voices that celebrated his self-destruction. He described it as being in a demonic trance.
But when he surrendered his life to Jesus Christ in 2005, everything changed. The high he used to chase in drugs, he found in the presence of God. He was delivered from addiction overnight and walked away from millions of dollars of contracts to follow the One who gave him peace. Now, he shares his testimony globally, showing that no pit is too deep for God’s love.
Nicky Cruz — From Gang Leader to God’s Servant
Once the most feared gang leader in New York City, Nicky Cruz’s life was marked by violence, hatred, and chaos. But God sent a young preacher named David Wilkerson into his neighborhood — a man bold enough to tell him, “Nicky, Jesus loves you.”
Those three words began to melt years of pain. Eventually, Nicky surrendered his life to Christ, and the man who used to spill blood now spreads hope to prisons, streets, and nations.
Romans 8:1–2 (NIV)
⚖️ Blame Less, Believe More
We often can’t understand God because of the chaos happening around us. When things fall apart, we blame Him. When things go well, we take the credit. But God doesn’t change with our emotions — He remains steady when everything else shakes.
Today’s world worships self. We’re told to “follow our heart” — but the Bible says the heart is deceitful above all things. We’re told to “be our own truth” — but truth doesn’t change because of opinion. When people live without God, the results are everywhere: confusion, depression, violence, and hopelessness.
2 Timothy 3:1–5 (NIV)
But God’s message hasn’t changed. You don’t need to fix yourself before coming to Him — you just need to come. He’ll do the fixing. You don’t have to have it all together — you just need to surrender.
Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
🙏 Final Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender
Father, we thank You for never giving up on us. We repent for every time we’ve walked in rebellion or confusion. We surrender our hearts, our addictions, our pride, and our pain. Deliver us from evil, from generational curses, from every spirit that tries to pull us back. Jesus, make us new creations today. Fill us with Your Spirit, and lead us in Your truth. In Your mighty name, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
