🔥 Galatians 4 — Slaves or Sons? You Can’t Be Both

“So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.” — Galatians 4:7

🔥 Religion Makes Slaves — Jesus Makes Sons and Daughters

Galatians 4 is Paul pulling the mask off religion. This chapter asks a hard question: Are you living as a child of God — or still living like a slave?

Many people claim Christ, but still live bound by fear, guilt, law, culture, sin, and the need for approval. Galatians 4 is the Gospel saying plainly:

Jesus didn’t save you to manage slavery better. He saved you so you could live as a son or daughter.

🔥 A Child Can Look Free but Still Live Like a Slave

Paul opens Galatians 4 with an illustration:

“What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate.” (Galatians 4:1)

In other words:

  • You can have an inheritance and never walk in it.
  • You can belong to the family but live like an orphan.
  • You can sit in church and still be controlled by fear.
  • You can know Scripture but not know freedom.

Paul says that before Christ, we were enslaved — even when we didn’t realize it.

🔥 We Were Enslaved — and Many Still Are

Galatians 4:3 says:

“So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world.”

Modern translation? People are still enslaved today by:

  • the approval of others,
  • fear of rejection,
  • addiction and secret sin,
  • shame and past mistakes,
  • pornography and lust,
  • money, status, and success,
  • trauma and bitterness,
  • religion without relationship,
  • culture without truth and identity confusion.

We’ve upgraded the packaging, but chains are still chains.

🔥 At Just the Right Time, God Stepped In

Galatians 4:4–5 gives a powerful summary of the Gospel:

“But when the set time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.” (Galatians 4:4–5)

Notice the flow:

  • God sent His Son,
  • Jesus stepped into our broken world,
  • He lived under the law perfectly,
  • He redeemed those under the law,
  • and He didn’t just forgive us — He adopted us.

Christianity is not self-improvement or moral performance. Christianity is adoption.

🔥 Not Just Forgiven — Adopted as Sons and Daughters

Galatians 4:6 says:

“Because you are His sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’” (Galatians 4:6)

“Abba” is not cold, religious language. It is intimate:

  • Dad.
  • Father.
  • Family language.

This destroys:

  • fear-based Christianity,
  • performance-based religion,
  • shame-driven faith,
  • legalism and works-based salvation.

God doesn’t want you terrified of Him like He’s abusive; He wants you to know Him as a holy, loving Father.

There is a right kind of fear of God — a holy reverence and respect. Just like you wouldn’t jump off a boat in the middle of a storm, or walk into a building while it’s being demolished, or play casually with high voltage electricity — you don’t treat a holy God lightly.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). That is not the fear of a slave who’s scared of punishment, but the fear of a child who knows their Father is powerful, holy, and not to be mocked.

🔥 So Why Do We Go Back to Slavery?

Paul asks a painful question in Galatians 4:9:

“But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?” (Galatians 4:9)

Modern version:

  • Why go back to fear when you’ve met the Father?
  • Why go back to law when you’ve tasted grace?
  • Why go back to sin you were delivered from?
  • Why go back to people-pleasing when God calls you His child?
  • Why go back to religion when you’ve been invited into relationship?

Why return to chains when Jesus opened the prison door?

🔥 Modern Slavery: Identity, Anxiety, and Performance

Look around and you can see Galatians 4 in real time:

  • Millions struggle with anxiety, fear, and depression.
  • Many don’t know who they are or why they exist.
  • People are more connected digitally but feel more alone than ever.
  • Even in church, many live in constant guilt instead of confidence in Christ.
  • People know about God, but don’t know Him as Father.

This isn’t just mental health. It’s spiritual orphanhood. People don’t know who they are, because they don’t know whose they are.

🔥 Slaves Obey from Fear — Sons Obey from Love

This is the heart of Galatians 4.

Slaves ask:

  • “What happens if I mess up?”
  • “Will I be punished?”
  • “Will I get kicked out?”

Sons and daughters ask:

  • “How can I honor my Father?”
  • “How can I please the One who saved me?”
  • “How can I live worthy of the love I’ve received?”

Same God. Different relationship.

We don’t throw away the fear of the Lord — that holy respect is the beginning of wisdom. But we reject the slavery fear that keeps us running away from Him, and instead walk in the reverent love that draws us closer.

🔥 “What Happened to All Your Joy?”

Paul says in Galatians 4:15:

“What has happened to all your joy?” (Galatians 4:15)

That question still hits hard today.

Many believers are:

  • saved but joyless,
  • forgiven but still acting condemned,
  • in church but still living in fear and shame.

You can belong to Jesus and still lose your joy if you keep slipping back into a slavery mindset.

🔥 Final Question: How Are You Living?

Galatians 4 forces the question:

  • Are you living like an orphan?
  • Are you living like a servant?
  • Are you living like a slave?
  • Or are you living as a son or daughter of the Most High God?

Jesus didn’t die to give you religion. He died to give you identity.

🙏 Prayer of Repentance, Surrender, and Deliverance

If this is speaking to you, pray this from your heart:

Father God, I repent for living like a slave when You have called me Your child. Forgive me for returning to fear, shame, performance, and trying to earn what You have already given me in Christ. I renounce every chain of slavery — fear, addiction, people-pleasing, religion, guilt, and lies. I receive the adoption You offer me through Jesus. I receive freedom. I receive sonship. Holy Spirit, teach me to live as a true child of God — confident, secure, obedient, and free. Give me a holy fear of the Lord and a deep love for my Father. I surrender fully to You. In Jesus’ mighty name — Amen.
