Believe and Receive

Religion Looks Alive. The Holy Spirit Makes You Alive.

There is a difference — and it affects everything.

Some people know the Bible very well. Some attend church faithfully. Some live disciplined lives. Some appear very moral.

But here’s a hard question: Is it possible to practice Christianity… without actually living by the Holy Spirit?

Romans 8:9 (WEB)
“But if any man doesn’t have Christ’s Spirit, he is not his.”

That verse doesn’t mention church attendance. It doesn’t mention religious effort. It doesn’t mention how much you know.

It simply says: without the Spirit, it isn’t life in Christ.

We All Drift Toward Performance

This isn’t just about church scandals or public hypocrisy. This is about the human heart.

We naturally drift toward performance. Toward proving. Toward appearing right. Toward being respected.

Sometimes we even mistake discipline for devotion.

2 Timothy 3:5 (WEB)
“Holding a form of godliness, but having denied its power.”

That’s religion without power. Structure without surrender. Practice without presence.

Very Relatable Reality

Maybe you’ve seen churches divide. Maybe you’ve seen leaders fall. Maybe you’ve seen money distort motives. Maybe you’ve felt disappointed by people who claimed to represent God.

That doesn’t mean God failed. It means people can act religious without being Spirit-led.

And let’s bring it closer:

Have you ever prayed about something… but already decided what you wanted?

Have you ever pushed something forward, called it “faith,” and later realized it wasn’t God’s will?

Have you ever confused your strong desire with the Holy Spirit’s leading?

Jeremiah 17:9 (WEB)
“The heart is deceitful above all things.”

That’s not condemnation. That’s reality. Without the Spirit guiding us, our own reasoning can look spiritual.

Jesus Warned About This

Matthew 7:22–23 (WEB)
“Many will tell me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy… didn’t we do many mighty works?’ Then I will tell them, ‘I never knew you.’”

Notice what they had: Works. Miracles. Activity. Religious effort.

Notice what they didn’t have: Relationship.

So What Does Receiving the Holy Spirit Look Like?

Acts 2:38 (WEB)
“Repent… and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

It starts with repentance. Not pretending. Not performing. Not comparing.

Repentance is honesty before God.

Luke 11:13 (WEB)
“How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

The Spirit isn’t earned. He is received.

And when the Spirit leads: There is conviction without shame. Correction without rejection. Power without pride. Freedom without chaos.

2 Corinthians 3:17 (WEB)
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

A Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender

Father God,

I come to You honestly. Not pretending. Not performing. Not trying to impress You.

If I have been practicing religion without truly surrendering, forgive me.

If pride has led me instead of Your Spirit, forgive me.

If I have trusted my own reasoning more than Your wisdom, forgive me.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I repent of hidden sin, self-reliance, and spiritual pride.

Deliver me from deception — even self-deception.

Break anything in me that resists Your will. Remove anything that is not from You.

I surrender my plans. I surrender my image. I surrender my control.

Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Lead me. Correct me. Teach me. Strengthen me.

Let my life be alive — not religious, but relational.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
