Spiritually Lazy

Waking Up from Spiritual Laziness

Introduction:

Today, we’re talking about waking up from being spiritually lazy and living with purpose as transformed followers of Jesus. Spiritual laziness can make us blind to God’s truth, as Paul warns in 2 Corinthians 4:3-4.

1. Spiritual Laziness:

  • Many believers get stuck in spiritual laziness, but Paul tells us to wake up (Ephesians 5:14).
  • Paul compares it to waking from sleep: “Wake up, O sleeper.”
  • We need to come alive spiritually because Jesus’ light shines on us.

2. Living with Purpose:

  • Living with purpose means using our time wisely and seeking wisdom (Ephesians 5:15-17).
  • Paul advises us to be careful and make wise choices.
  • We should understand what God wants and live intentionally.

3. Children of Light:

  • As followers of Jesus, we are filled with the Spirit, which changes how we live (Ephesians 5:18-20).
  • Paul compares being filled with the Spirit to being drunk with wine, but in a good way—it leads to singing, giving thanks, and worshiping together.
  • Living in the Spirit brings joy, gratitude, and builds each other up.

Bonus Verses: Hebrews 10:26-31

These verses remind us of the serious consequences of deliberately sinning and the importance of honoring Jesus’ sacrifice.

Conclusion:

Let’s respond to Paul’s call to wake up from spiritual laziness and live wisely and purposefully. Let’s embrace the Spirit’s power to transform us into lights in the world. Remember, Jesus has already done everything we need by dying for us. Now, let’s live for Him in thankful obedience.

Word for word prayer: Lord, we thank you for this time that we can read your word. May we never take our lives for granted in the name of Jesus Christ. We truly want to live for your Glory, so we pray that you can give us the ears to hear your guidance. Minds to discern your will Lord in the name of Jesus Christ. May every thought, action, and decision align to your will as we surrender our complete being to you in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Ephesians 5

English Standard Version

Walk in Love

5 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. 4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. 5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,

“Awake, O sleeper,

    and arise from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you.”

15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:3-4

3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Hebrews 10:26-31

26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
