John 20 — The Risen Christ and the Life of the Holy Spirit
Forgiveness, surrender, and living by the Spirit.
John 20 is one of the most powerful chapters in the Bible. It tells us about the resurrection of Jesus Christ and what it means for believers today.
When Jesus rose from the dead, everything changed. Death was defeated. Hope was restored. And something new was given to believers — the Holy Spirit.
After Jesus appeared to His disciples, something remarkable happened.
John 20:22 — “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.'”
This moment shows that the Holy Spirit was not just for Jesus. It was not just for the disciples. The Holy Spirit is for all believers.
The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is meant to live in each one of us.
This changes how we live. It changes how we speak. It changes how we forgive.
Then Jesus says something that often raises questions:
John 20:23 — “If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven them. If you retain anyone’s sins, they have been retained.”
This does not mean that humans have the power to forgive sins on their own. Only God has the authority to forgive sins.
Instead, this shows that believers are called to walk in forgiveness and reflect God’s mercy.
When we forgive others, especially those who have hurt us deeply, we are surrendering to God’s will.
Forgiveness is not easy. Forgiving someone who abused you, mistreated you, or wronged you deeply can feel impossible.
But that is where the Holy Spirit works.
When we forgive: we disable the flesh, and we enable the Holy Spirit.
The flesh wants revenge. The flesh wants bitterness. The flesh wants to hold on to pain.
But the Spirit leads us toward freedom.
Forgiveness is not saying what happened was okay. Forgiveness is saying: “Lord, I release this to You.”
When we forgive, we are trusting God to handle justice. We are trusting God to heal our hearts. We are choosing obedience over emotion.
John 20 reminds us that the resurrection was not just about Jesus rising. It was about believers rising into a new life.
A life led by the Holy Spirit. A life marked by forgiveness. A life surrendered to God.
This is the life Jesus calls us to.
A sermon alone will not save you. Listening alone will not save you. Only repentance and a new life in Jesus Christ can save you.
Turn to Him. Surrender to Him. Let His Spirit live in you.
God bless you abundantly in the name of Jesus Christ.
Prayer
Lord, help us walk in Your Spirit. Help us forgive even when it is hard. Remove bitterness and fill us with Your peace. Teach us to surrender our pain and trust You fully. Let Your Holy Spirit guide our hearts and lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
