From Death to Life
Understanding the grace of God — Ephesians 2
Ephesians chapter 2 explains something every human being needs to understand. Before Christ, we were spiritually dead. But because of God’s mercy, we can be made alive.
Our Condition Without God
“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air… All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts.”
The Bible does not say we were simply “struggling.” It says we were spiritually dead. That means we needed rescue.
God’s Mercy Changes Everything
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved.”
Notice something powerful here. God acted while we were still broken. He did not wait for us to fix ourselves first.
Saved by Grace, Not by Works
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.”
This passage removes pride from salvation. No one can say they earned their way to heaven. It is a gift from God.
Created for Good Works
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Good works do not save us. But once we are saved, our lives begin to change. We start living differently because God is working in us.
Christ Brings Peace
“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace.”
Jesus did more than forgive sin. He brought us near to God. He restored the relationship that sin had broken.
We Become God’s Household
“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.”
When we come to Christ, we are not outsiders anymore. We become part of God’s family.
The Invitation
Ephesians 2 tells the story of every believer:
- We were lost.
- God showed mercy.
- Jesus made a way.
- Now we live a new life.
If you feel far from God today, remember this truth: He is rich in mercy.
Prayer
Father God, thank you for your mercy and grace. Thank you for sending Jesus Christ to bring us from death to life. Help us live the new life you created us for. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Study the Bible. Grow in faith. Walk with Christ.
