Mark 1 — The Beginning of the Good News
Mark doesn’t waste time. There’s no genealogy. No long introduction. No warm-up.
Mark chapter 1 moves fast because the message is urgent. The Gospel is not an idea — it’s a call to action.
Hear the Word
The Message Jesus Began With
Before miracles. Before crowds. Before controversy.
Jesus begins with repentance.
Mark 1:15 (WEB)
“The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand!
Repent, and believe in the Good News.”
Repentance is not shame. It is clarity.
It means turning away from what is destroying us and turning toward the One who gives life.
Immediate Obedience
When Jesus calls His first disciples, there is no negotiation.
Mark 1:17–18 (WEB)
“Jesus said to them, ‘Come after me,
and I will make you fishers for men.’
Immediately they left their nets, and followed him.”
The word “immediately” appears again and again in Mark.
Delayed obedience is often disguised disobedience.
Authority That Cannot Be Ignored
Jesus doesn’t teach like the religious leaders. He speaks with authority — and even unclean spirits recognize it.
Mark 1:27 (WEB)
“They were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying,
‘What is this? A new teaching?
For with authority he commands even the unclean spirits,
and they obey him!’”
The spiritual realm recognizes Jesus — even when people resist Him.
Compassion and Power
Jesus heals the sick, casts out demons, and restores people society has pushed aside.
Mark 1:41 (WEB)
“Being moved with compassion,
Jesus stretched out his hand, and touched him, and said to him,
‘I want to. Be made clean.’”
Power without compassion is dangerous. Compassion without power is ineffective.
Jesus has both.
Even Jesus Withdrew to Pray
With crowds growing and demands increasing, Jesus does something modern culture avoids — He withdraws to pray.
Mark 1:35 (WEB)
“Early in the morning, while it was still dark,
he rose up and went out, and departed into a deserted place,
and there prayed.”
If Jesus needed time alone with the Father, so do we.
