Beautiful

Acts 3 — Such As I Have, I Give

“But Peter said, ‘I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.’” (Acts 3:6, ESV)

The Beautiful Gate and a Broken Man

Acts chapter 3 opens with a sharp contrast: a Beautiful Gate and a broken man.

Scripture says:

“And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple.” (Acts 3:2)

The gate was called Beautiful — but the man’s condition was anything but. That’s how our world looks today: beautiful buildings, beautiful feeds, beautiful frames… and behind it all, broken people.

Every day, this man sat in the same spot, in the same pain, with the same expectation: maybe someone will toss me a little something and keep walking.

Then Peter and John came by — and everything changed.

“Look at Us” — Holy Spirit Boldness

The Bible says:

“Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, ‘Look at us.’ And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them.” (Acts 3:4–5)

Most people avoided eye contact. Peter did the opposite: he locked eyes with the man.

That’s Holy Ghost boldness. That’s compassion. That’s what it looks like when the Spirit of God refuses to let you walk past someone like they’re invisible.

Then Peter said the famous words:

“I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” (Acts 3:6)

Peter didn’t have money. He didn’t have a gift card. He didn’t have a program. But he had something greater: the Holy Spirit and the Name of Jesus.

You’ve Seen This Man Too

You may not have seen a man begging at the door of a literal temple, but you have seen him:

  • outside the gas station
  • under a bridge
  • at the red light with a cardboard sign
  • in a grocery store parking lot
  • on the sidewalk downtown
  • in your social media feed asking for help
  • in your own family, quietly struggling

We all pass by “Beautiful Gates” — places that look good on the outside — but there are broken people sitting at the edge of them, just like in Acts 3.

And just like Peter, you might feel: “I wish I could do something, but I don’t have extra money.”

Here’s the truth: you don’t need silver and gold to be used by God. If the Holy Ghost lives in you, you already have something to give.

Act on It: Pray, Speak, Testify

What can you do when you meet “the man at the Beautiful Gate”?

  • Pray for them out loud in the name of Jesus Christ, if the situation allows.
  • Bless them even from your car — pray as you drive by, even if they can’t hear you.
  • Share your own testimony of what God has done for you.
  • Share this very chapter and message and tell them, “The Lord put this on my heart for the ‘Beautiful Gates’ and the people sitting by them.”

That’s one of many simple ways to “pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

You might say, “But I’m not perfect.” Of course you’re not. But the God who lives in you is perfect.

The Bible says:

“Be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:16)

Holiness is perfection — and we are not there yet. But practice moves you closer. The more you practice holiness, obedience, and compassion, the more your life begins to reflect the Holy One.

We ain’t perfect, but God is. Practice doesn’t make you perfect — but it brings you closer to the Perfect One.

Beautiful Opportunities — Modern Need All Around Us

The man at the Beautiful Gate was a beautiful opportunity for God’s power to be revealed. Today, we are surrounded by the same kind of opportunities.

Look at a few realities in our world:

  • Homelessness: Hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. are homeless on any given night. Many are in visible public places — our own “Beautiful Gates.”
  • Mental Health: Around 1 in 4 adults experiences symptoms of anxiety or depression in a given week. People look “fine” on the outside but are crippled on the inside.
  • Loneliness: Surveys show that a majority of people feel lonely, unseen, or disconnected from real community.
  • Addiction & Overdose: Tens of thousands die each year from drug overdoses. Countless more are trapped in addiction, standing at their own “gate,” hoping for a way out.
  • Financial Struggle: Many families are one paycheck away from crisis, quietly begging God for help while they still try to look “beautiful” on social media.

Every one of these situations is not just a tragedy — it is a Beautiful Opportunity for the Church to act like Peter: to stop, to see, to speak, to pray, to love, and to bring Jesus into the moment.

We’re Not the Savior — but We Know Him

You can’t fix everyone. You’re not the Savior. But you know the Savior, and He lives in you.

Peter didn’t heal the man with his own power:

“Why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? … His name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong.” (Acts 3:12,16)

Your job is obedience. God’s job is the miracle.

Prayer of Repentance, Surrender, and Deliverance

If this word is tugging on your heart, pray this:

Lord Jesus Christ, I repent for walking past the people You placed in front of me. Forgive me for every time I saw a need and stayed silent, too busy, too afraid, or too distracted to act. Today I surrender my eyes, my mouth, my hands, and my heart to You. Fill me with the Holy Spirit. Give me boldness like Peter and compassion like You. Deliver me from fear, selfishness, and unbelief. Use my life to speak Your name, to pray for others, and to share my testimony with the “Beautiful” people I see every day. Teach me to pray without ceasing. Let me see every broken situation as a Beautiful Opportunity for Your glory. I surrender afresh to You today. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ I pray — Amen.
