John 17 is one of the most intimate moments in all of Scripture. Jesus isn’t preaching to crowds or debating religious leaders—He’s praying. And in that prayer, He talks to the Father about Himself, His disciples, and every believer who would ever live, including you and me.
1. “Father, Glorify Your Son” (John 17:1–5)

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.”
Before Jesus prays for us, He prays that the Father would glorify Him—so that He in turn would glorify the Father. His focus is not self-promotion, but the revelation of God’s character through His obedience.
Today, the world glorifies influencers, celebrities, politicians, movements, and money. We live in an age saturated with “follow me,” “look at me,” and “like and subscribe.” Yet anxiety, depression, and emptiness keep rising. Our culture is drowning in self and starving for God.
Scriptures that reinforce this:
- 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
- Colossians 3:3–4 – “Your life is now hidden with Christ in God… Christ, who is your life…”
Bottom line: You were not created to glorify yourself. You were created so that the glory of God would be seen in and through you.
2. “Sanctify Them by the Truth; Your Word Is Truth” (John 17:17)

“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”
Jesus prays that we would be sanctified—set apart and made holy—by the truth. Not by trends, polls, or feelings, but by God’s Word.
We live in a time when people are told to “live your truth” and “follow your heart.” But when everybody’s “truth” is different, no one can stand on anything solid. Division, confusion, and offense are the natural result.

- John 14:6 – “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
- Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
- 2 Timothy 3:16–17 – All Scripture is God-breathed and equips us for every good work.
Truth is not just an idea; Truth is a Person. When you anchor your life in Jesus and His Word, you are being sanctified—set apart from the lies of this age.
3. “My Prayer Is Not That You Take Them Out of the World” (John 17:15)

“My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.”
Jesus does not ask the Father to remove us from the world. Instead, He prays for our protection in the middle of it.
Temptation, spiritual warfare, and darkness are everywhere—online, in entertainment, in classrooms, in politics, even inside some churches. The average believer today can be exposed in a single day to more corruption and temptation than previous generations saw in weeks or months.
But Jesus’ prayer is that we would be guarded and kept while we shine as lights.

- 1 John 5:19 – “The whole world is under the control of the evil one.”
- 1 Peter 5:8–9 – “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion… Resist him, standing firm in the faith.”
- Ephesians 6:10–11 – “Be strong in the Lord… Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
We are not called to hide; we are called to stand—protected by the power of God.
4. “That They May Be One” (John 17:20–23)

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you…”
Here Jesus is praying directly for us—“those who will believe” through the message of the apostles. His request? Unity.
Not fake unity that ignores truth, but real unity rooted in Christ Himself.
In our time, Christians are often more known for what they fight about than for whom they worship. Churches split over politics, personalities, and secondary doctrines. Believers tear each other down publicly on social media. All the while, a watching world decides that Christianity must be a joke.

“Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

- 1 Corinthians 1:10 – “That there be no divisions among you…”
- Ephesians 4:3 – “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
Unity in truth is not optional—it is part of Jesus’ prayer and part of our witness.
5. “I Want Them to Be With Me Where I Am” (John 17:24)

“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory…”
Jesus doesn’t just tolerate us. He wants us. He desires relationship. He prayed for you before He went to the cross for you.
Scriptures that reinforce this:
- Revelation 21:3 – God will dwell with His people; they will be His people, and He will be their God.
- Hebrews 7:25 – He “always lives to intercede” for those who come to God through Him.
John 17 is not just history—it is Jesus’ heart for you right now.
6. What This Means for Us Today
John 17 gives us a blueprint for surviving—and thriving—in a chaotic, confused world:
- Live for God’s glory, not your own.
- Build your life on the truth of God’s Word, not on opinions or trends.
- Walk boldly in the world but stay protected in Christ.
- Pursue unity with other believers in truth and love.
- Remember that Jesus wants you with Him and is still praying for you.
Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender

I repent for living for my own glory instead of Yours.
I repent for believing lies instead of standing on Your Word.

Deliver me from every chain of sin, addiction, confusion, and darkness.
Protect me from the evil one as I live for You in this world.
Unite my heart with Yours, and help me walk in unity with other believers.
I surrender my life, my plans, my opinions, and my future to You.
Thank You that You prayed for me and that You are still interceding for me.
