Do you know what you follow?

Who Are You Really Following?

Deuteronomy 13:4 (NIV)
It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.

Life will test what you believe. It will offer you opportunities to serve yourself in the name of God and convince you that you’re doing His will. But the Lord looks beyond our appearances — He searches our hearts (Jeremiah 17:10).

Many people today “honor God with their lips, but their hearts are far from Him” (Matthew 15:8). The modern church often mirrors the world instead of Christ — chasing entertainment, feelings, and fame rather than holiness, humility, and obedience. We’ve replaced reverence with routine and obedience with convenience.

When We Serve Ourselves Instead of God

Studies show that 58% of Americans identify as Christians (Pew Research Center, 2022), yet only 20% attend church weekly, and fewer than 10% read the Bible daily (Barna Group, 2023). That means the majority of those who “claim Christ” rarely engage with His Word.

We often justify our actions by saying, “God knows my heart.” But that’s exactly the problem — He does. He knows when our “service” is self-serving. Jesus warned that many will say, “Lord, Lord,” and He will respond, “I never knew you” (Matthew 7:21–23).

False Teachers and Modern Deception

The rise of social media has given a platform to millions, including false prophets. According to Pew Research, over 70% of U.S. adults now get their “spiritual content” online instead of from a physical church or Bible study. Many of these sources blend half-truths with personal gain, preaching comfort instead of conviction.

Scripture warned us about this: “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear” (2 Timothy 4:3).

Some of you know you’re sitting under false teaching. You feel it. You sense the lack of conviction, the absence of truth, and the acceptance of sin that God clearly calls wrong. Yet, it’s easier to stay where you’re comfortable than to follow Christ on the narrow road.

The Narrow Path Still Exists

Jesus said, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:13–14).

We live in a world where the broad road looks easier and more appealing. But remember: truth will never be popular, and holiness will never be convenient. True discipleship costs something. It requires dying to self daily (Luke 9:23), resisting the world’s lies, and holding fast to God even when others walk away.

And yet, we are promised that those who “hold fast” will not be put to shame (Romans 10:11). God rewards faithfulness, not popularity.

Discernment Is a Gift, Not a Feeling

We are told to “test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1). Discernment comes from spending time in Scripture and walking with the Holy Spirit — not from emotion or personal opinion.

Without discernment, we become vulnerable to deception. And without obedience, our discernment is useless. God’s Word is our anchor in a world of noise and manipulation.

Final Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender

Heavenly Father, I come before You humbly. Forgive me for the times I’ve followed my own way instead of Yours. Deliver me from deception, pride, and compromise. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and give me discernment to recognize truth. Help me obey You with my whole heart and hold fast to You, no matter what the world says. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
