Branded: Who Really Owns You?
A conversation for skeptics, new believers, and old saints who need fresh fire.
Isaiah 43:11–12 (NIV)
“I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior. I have revealed and saved and proclaimed— I, and not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “that I am God.”
Most people hear idolatry and picture golden calves and incense. But idolatry never died—it just got better marketing. Today the altars glow. They fit in your pocket. They ask for your attention instead of your incense. We don’t bow with our knees—we bow with our time, money, scrolling, and obsession.
Question: If someone followed your spending, your screen-time, and your imagination for seven days, whose disciple would they say you are?
The New Branding Iron
Branding used to be a hot iron that said, “This one belongs to me.” Now it’s mental and spiritual. Logos and labels whisper worth. A $5 phone case becomes $50 when a logo is etched on it. A $10 shirt becomes $100 because a swoosh was sewn in.
Truth bomb: We don’t wear clothes; we wear labels. And labels quietly label us back.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2
The Cult of Consumerism
We line up like worshippers at the temple of the “latest and greatest.” We tithe our paychecks to brands, then evangelize, “Y’all HAVE to try this.” Meanwhile, Jesus stands whispering, “Come to Me, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
- Debt-for-status: We finance an image to impress people who aren’t looking.
- Luxury addiction: The high fades fast; the bill doesn’t.
- Endless upgrade: The idol promises peace next purchase… and the next.
The Cost of Keeping Up
We’ll swipe for phones, shoes, cars, vapes—yet on Sunday we’ve “got nothing” for the same church folk feeding the hungry and helping people get off drugs. “They’re hypocrites,” we say—while wiring our worship to corporations that glorify lust, pride, and vanity.
Everyone gasps when a church scandal hits—rightly so. But the world yawns when fashion houses sexualize children; then lines return for the next drop. Darkness sells, so darkness gets a pass. Tell me again who’s brainwashed?
“You cannot serve both God and money.” — Matthew 6:24
We Worship What We Fear Losing
“I believe in myself.” Until the floor drops out. Bills don’t care about affirmations. Sickness ignores self-esteem. Death never checks your follower count. God says, “Apart from Me there is no savior.” (Isaiah 43:11) He isn’t arrogant—He’s accurate. Everything else takes; Jesus alone gives.
Self-indulgence drains the soul. Self-sacrifice fills it. That’s why Jesus says deny yourself and carry your cross daily. (Luke 9:23) Idols are daily. So your faith must be, too.
The Tithe No One Talks About
You already tithe—you just don’t call it that. You tithe to Netflix, Apple, Amazon, Starbucks, Nike; you tithe your attention to influencers; you tithe your time to your phone. Then when it’s time to give to God’s house, we suddenly become auditors: “Where’s it going?” Funny—we never ask the nightclub or the sneaker drop.
Hard truth: Many have become faithful givers to darkness and stingy skeptics toward the Kingdom. That’s not wisdom—that’s deception.
“Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.” — 1 John 5:21
The Church Isn’t the Problem—Our Hearts Are
Yes, some churches failed. Some leaders fell. But that’s not a reason to abandon God’s house—it’s a reason to become it. If the Church were perfect, none of us could walk in. We don’t quit hospitals because some doctors are corrupt; we don’t stop eating because some restaurants are dirty. Don’t abandon Jesus because Judas existed.
“Freely you have received; freely give.” — Matthew 10:8
The False Gospel of Self
Some pulpits peddle self-elevation: manifest more, love self more, talk to the universe more. But the Gospel isn’t about upgrading the “old you”—it’s about crucifying it so Christ can live in you.
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20
“Whoever loses their life for Me will find it.” — Matthew 16:25
When the Playlist Becomes a Prayer List
“Music is just music,” we say—while we can’t function without it. That’s worship. The enemy happily disciples us through beats and hooks that catechize lust, pride, greed, and violence. If demons wrote the lyrics, why are they always on repeat?
Elijah asked, “How long will you waver between two opinions?” (1 Kings 18:21) Today, it’s between Christ and the algorithm.

- What purchase “proves” my worth to me?
- What app gets my first and last hour each day?
- What am I terrified to lose—and what does that say about my god?
- Where do I give freely… and where do I make excuses?
The Invitation: From Branded to Sealed
God isn’t shaming you for getting tangled in the system—He’s rescuing you from it. The same Jesus who flipped temple tables wants to flip the tables in your heart—not to destroy, but to cleanse. He’s not asking first for your wallet, but your want-to. When He has your heart, generosity becomes joy.

Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender
Lord Jesus, I confess I’ve bowed to lesser gods—brands, screens, status, and self. I repent. Wash me in Your blood. Break every chain of greed, envy, lust, and pride. Deliver me from the spirit of consumerism and the fear of man. I renounce idols, seen and unseen, and I surrender my life to You. Seal me with Your Holy Spirit. Renew my mind. Make generosity my joy, holiness my desire, and Your presence my treasure. I belong to You, King Jesus. Amen.
