People who gossip hate this

Are Your Words Building Up or Tearing Down?

Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

This is something we all struggle with. It’s not just about avoiding “bad words.” It’s about watching the very context of what we say. How easy is it to spread a rumor, share a dirty joke, or complain behind someone’s back? And yet, how many of us are just as quick to spread the gospel? Remember: we reap what we sow. If our mouths are filled with gossip and negativity, our lives will reflect that. If we choose to speak life, we will sow blessings.

Words Have Power

Studies show the average person speaks around 7,000–20,000 words per day. According to research from the University of Arizona, women average about 16,000 words daily and men about 15,000. That’s a lot of opportunity either to speak life or to cause harm.

The American Psychological Association notes that gossip makes up about 65% of daily conversation. Meanwhile, only a fraction of Christians share their faith regularly—Pew Research found that less than 30% of believers in the U.S. talk about their faith weekly.

Imagine if even half of the gossip we spread was replaced with encouragement, scripture, or testimony! The impact on families, communities, and workplaces would be immeasurable.

Biblical Guidance

  • Proverbs 18:21 — “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
  • James 3:5–6 — The tongue is small but can cause great destruction if not controlled.
  • Matthew 12:36–37 — We will give account for every careless word spoken.

God makes it clear: what we say matters. Our speech reveals what is in our hearts. If our words are constantly negative, deceitful, or corrupt, it’s a sign of what’s really inside us. That’s why Christ calls us not only to believe but also to transform our hearts and minds, so that even our words glorify Him.

Practical Application

Before you speak, ask yourself:

  1. Will this build someone up?
  2. Does this reflect Christ’s love?
  3. Would I still say this if Jesus were standing right here with me?

If the answer is no—hold your tongue. Self-control is not weakness; it is godly wisdom.

Final Prayer

Lord Jesus, forgive me for every careless and harmful word I’ve spoken. Cleanse my heart so that my mouth speaks life, encouragement, and truth. Fill me with Your Spirit so I can bring glory to You through my words and actions. I repent of gossip, negativity, and unwholesome talk. Today I surrender my speech to You. In Jesus’ mighty name—Amen.
