Monkey See, Monkey Do

Monkey See, Monkey Do: Are You Following God or the Crowd?

A simple, global reminder to be a heavenly example—right where you are.

Ephesians 5:1 (NIV) — “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children.”

All over the world, people copy what they see—trends, attitudes, lifestyles, even “religion.” It’s easy to go with the flow: dress like them, talk like them, post like them. But deep down, every heart—whether in a village, big city, or anywhere in between— knows the same question: Am I following God or just following the crowd?

Some people pretend to be “into God” for approval, status, or benefits. Others follow Christ because they know they’re saved by grace through faith. Wherever you’re from, whatever language you speak, this applies: your life is shaping someone else’s path. You’re someone’s example— to your kids, crew, teammates, classmates, neighbors, customers, and even strangers online. Let your life point upward.

Real People, Real Choices — And God Met Them There

  • Noah: While others mocked, he obeyed—and his family was saved. [Genesis 6:9–22]
  • Joseph: Betrayed, trafficked, falsely accused, imprisoned—yet faithful. God lifted him up to protect many. [Genesis 39] [Genesis 41]
  • Daniel: Chose prayer over popularity and safety. God shut the lions’ mouths and honored him. [Daniel 6]
  • Ruth: Left comfort to follow the God of Israel and care for family. God wove her into the story of Jesus. [Ruth 1:16]
  • The Apostles: Ordinary workers who followed Jesus when it cost them everything—and changed the world. [Acts 4:19–20]

Their cultures were different. Their languages were different. Their problems were different. But God was the same—and He still is. Your faithfulness today can ripple to places you’ve never seen and people you’ll never meet.

When It Looks Like Bad Choices “Work”

Sometimes people make selfish or sinful choices and seem to get away with it. Don’t be fooled. Jesus told a story about a rich man living in daily luxury while ignoring a poor man named Lazarus. On earth, the rich man looked like he was winning. In eternity, the truth was revealed. [Luke 16:19–31]

You are not missing out by following God. You are investing in what lasts. One day, “each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.” [Romans 14:12]

Bottom line: Don’t copy the crowd; copy Christ. Seed choices grow future harvests. [Galatians 6:7]

How to Be a Heavenly Example (Anywhere on Earth)

  1. Choose integrity when no one is watching. The secret place is where God shapes public impact.
  2. Serve someone near you today. A meal, a ride, a kind word, a prayer. Small seeds—big fruit.
  3. Tell the truth with love. Not harsh, not fake—helpful, hopeful, and holy.
  4. Practice self-control online. Post like someone’s salvation story might start with your timeline.
  5. Stay faithful in the ordinary. God often promotes quiet faithfulness before public fruitfulness.

Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender

Lord Jesus, I turn from following the crowd and choose to follow You. Forgive my pretending and my compromise. Deliver me from every distraction and fill me with Your Spirit. Make my life a clear, loving example that points people to You. Use my words, work, and witness to lead others toward heaven. I surrender all to You—today and every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
