Tempted?

Temptation: Why We Want It, Why We Feel Bad, and How to Win

Deuteronomy 28 shows a simple pattern: obedience brings blessing; rebellion brings consequences. God is not “wishy-washy.” He is loving and just—jealous for you, unwilling to force your love, because real love must be chosen.

Deuteronomy 28:1–2, 15 (NIV)

“If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands… all these blessings will come on you… But if you do not obey… all these curses will come on you.”

Why Do I Want to Indulge So Often?

From the beginning, temptation has worked the same way: what looks good + what feels good + pride (1 John 2:16). In Eden, Eve saw the fruit was “good… pleasing… desirable” (Genesis 3:6–7). In the wilderness, Jesus was tempted with appetite, pride, and power (Matthew 4:1–11).

  • James 1:14–15 — Desire drags us away; when it conceives, it gives birth to sin; sin grows up and brings death.
  • Romans 7:15 — “I do not do the good I want… but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.”
  • Hebrews 11:25 — Sin has fleeting pleasures.

Why Do I Feel Bad After?

Because your conscience is awake. God wrote His law on our hearts (Romans 2:15). That grief is mercy pointing you back to Him (2 Corinthians 7:10; Psalm 32:1–5).

Modern Temptations, Same Old Traps

Yesterday’s lust, pride, greed, and escapism now come packaged as algorithmic feeds, endless scrolls, hyper-targeted ads, on-demand pleasure, and “just one more” dopamine hit. The spirit behind it hasn’t changed.

  • Isaiah 5:20 — We live in a time that calls evil good and good evil.
  • James 4:17 — Sin is choosing against what you know is right.
  • Ephesians 6:10–12 — Our struggle is spiritual; suit up in God’s armor.

Not a Fairytale God

God is good, but He’s not “soft.” He is holy, just, and jealous for you (Exodus 34:14; Hebrews 12:29; Romans 11:22). He won’t force your love (Deuteronomy 30:19; Joshua 24:15). And yet His mercy runs deeper than our sin: Christ died for sinners (Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; John 3:16; 1 John 1:9).

Luke 10:19 (NIV)

“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy…”

Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance, and Surrender

Father, I confess my sin and my weakness. I’ve chased what feels good and ignored what I know is right. Lord Jesus, thank You for dying for me and rising again. Wash me clean by Your blood. I renounce every sinful habit and lie. By the authority You’ve given me (Luke 10:19), I resist the enemy. Holy Spirit, fill me—renew my mind, strengthen my will, and set my desires on the things above. Today I choose life. I choose obedience. I surrender all to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Next Steps

  • Open your Bible daily (start with Matthew & Romans); memorize one verse a week.
  • Pray morning & night; invite a mature believer to walk with you.
  • Remove triggers (apps, sites, places). Replace them with Scripture, worship, and service.
  • Share Jesus with one person this week; offer to pray with them.
