What If This Is a Simulation? Why Your Choices Still Count
By Steven Jones
Ever feel like life is scripted, like you’re inside a “program” that sometimes flickers or bends? Even if we call this world a “simulation,” what you do inside it absolutely matters—because there is a higher Reality beyond it, and you will “unplug” and meet the One who made it all.
Biblical Reinforcement: A Higher Reality Behind What We See
“By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.”
“For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible… all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.”
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”
Scripture consistently says there’s more than meets the eye: a created order sustained by Christ, a present “shadow” reality, and an eternal accountability when we step into the full light.
“Matrix Glitches”? Or God’s Providence Breaking In
People report moments that feel like reality “bent”—what pop culture calls glitches. Scripture calls it providence and miracle:
- Perfect timing that saves a life: A last-second change of route avoids a fatal crash. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD.” (see Psalm 37:23)
- Healing beyond odds: Doctors say, “We can’t explain it,” but prayer preceded the turnaround (cf. James 5:14–16).
- A warning dream that comes true: Like Joseph’s and Paul’s providential dreams that redirected history (see Matthew 2:12–13; Acts 27:23–24).
- Time that “stretches” in crisis: Peace beyond understanding settles over you (see Philippians 4:6–7).
Call them glitches if you like—believers call them reminders that the Programmer is present and personal.
Stats: Who Thinks Life Is a “Sim”? Who’s Struggling—And Why It Matters
- Simulation belief: Public polling over the last decade finds a significant minority—often one-quarter to about half depending on the question—say it’s plausible we live in a simulation (see Nick Bostrom’s “simulation argument” and public summaries: Bostrom, BuiltIn overview). Estimates vary by survey and wording.
- Mental health: About 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness in a given year. (NIMH) Globally, roughly 1 in 8 live with a mental disorder; anxiety and depression are most common. (WHO)
- Loneliness: About half of U.S. adults report measurable loneliness. (U.S. Surgeon General, 2023)
When people feel like reality is thin or meaningless, anxiety and despair often spike. The Bible answers with a thicker, truer reality in Christ.
Why Your Choices Inside the “Sim” Still Count
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord… It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
“What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”
If this is a “test environment,” it’s designed to reveal whom you trust. Every hidden choice registers with the God who “holds all things together.”
Waking Up to the Real: Jesus Christ
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
How to Live Awake
- Turn to Christ daily: Pray and read (start with John or Ephesians). (John 1:1–18)
- Reset your focus: “Set your minds on things above.” (Colossians 3:1–2)
- Trade panic for prayer: Receive the peace that “transcends understanding.” (Philippians 4:6–7)
- Practice good works: You’re created for them. (Ephesians 2:8–10)
Prayer of Repentance, Deliverance & Surrender
Father in Heaven, I confess I’ve chased illusions and feared the unknown. I repent of my sin and unbelief. I turn to Jesus Christ, the true Reality and Lord of all. Deliver me from lies, anxiety, and despair. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Open my eyes to see what is eternal, and teach me to live wisely inside this world for Your glory. I surrender my life, my choices, and my future to You. In Jesus Christ’s name, Amen.
